PRESSURE TREATED
Pressure treated deck

Majority of decks built in Canada are constructed from pressure-treated wood because it is typically the most economical choice of decking. Pressure treating lumber protects it against decay and termites for long-term protection of the wood when used in exterior application.

A pressure treated wood deck is stainable, hard enough to resist abuse and will last 20 to 30 years or longer with regular maintenance. Once your pressure treated deck has completely dried, generally 1 year after installation, apply a water repellent to your deck on an annual basis to protect against moisture damage, splintering and discoloration.

WESTERN RED CEDAR

Cedar possesses an oil preservative that makes it naturally resistant to decay and insect damage. It features stabilising properties that help prevent it from cracking, twisting, warping, splitting, and it will not expand due to moisture or temperature changes. Its beautiful straight grains, texture and red to pinkish brown colour make it one of the most aesthetically pleasing deck materials. Cedar can be a great upgrade to a pressure treated deck but expect to be more costly.

A cedar deck has a long-life expectancy of 20-30 years with no required maintenance due to its natural properties. But to maintain the beautiful natural look of cedar wood deck, it is recommended to softly power wash the deck, sand rough spots, and apply a finish to keep it looking great at least once every 2 years.

COMPOSITE

If near-zero maintenance is your goal, then composite decking is your option. Composite decking is made from a combination of natural wood fibres and durable resin. Designed to resemble real wood, but once it is down, it will not rot, splinter, or twist and requires not painting or staining.

Many composite decking options are available including an extensive variety of finishes and colours. Composite decking only requires normal, regular cleaning to maintain their beauty and some composites come with a 25-year “fade and stain” warranty.
